Who can push prison rates down?
Once upon a time there was a criminal justice system that was growing and growing. It was a tough on crime and short on treatment. Offenders came and went and in no time at all, came back again for additional sentences because of additional crimes. Prison staff saw the predictable pattern of addiction which, left untreated, became the return ticket to prison because of new drug-related crimes. Law enforcement saw it. Harvard Medical School now offers a program for third-year students to combat “ethical erosion” and to help students retain their idealism, reports Duke Divinity School’s Faith & Leadership web site. South Dallas is an area known for broken families, high student drop out rates, gang violence and difficult living. On the surface, it seems to be an area locked in the cycles of poverty. But look a little closer, and you’ll see shiny spots of hope spreading throughout the area.
