What is Apogee?
There are over 300,000 young adults in Manchester, yet less than 1% of them are followers of Jesus. There is a desperate need for the transforming power of the Gospel in this city.
Apogee is a missional ministry, that seeks to see a generation of young professionals and adults so on fire for the Gospel that it transforms the city of Manchester and the whole of the United Kingdom.
We do this by doing what Jesus did, finding people outside the church’s doors and sharing the Gospel in these third spaces. We plant churches in these thirds spaces (coffee shops, community centers and meeting spaces) and equip people to follow Jesus and multiply disciples.
Apogee is led by Andrew and Mariava Phillips, who have a heart for planting churches and reaching the city of Manchester with the Gospel. Andrew and Mariava are high school sweethearts. Andrew enjoys studying theology, graphic design and all things to do with coffee. Mariava loves photography, having coffee with friends and writing. We both love movies, cooking and being outdoors, which means we’ve had to get use to the Manchester rain!
Why I Feel Called to this particular ministry
The UK is the birthplace of some of the most significant church revivals and mission movements in history. Yet for the last 30 years, the number of people following Jesus has rapidly declined. Only six percent of people in England regularly attend church services: In addition to this, many historical churches are being turned into nightclubs or bars. There is an entire generation of young people who have not heard the Gospel.
God has called us to share the Gospel in this post-Christian nation, to help restore the heart of the church and to establish discipleship programs to help new believers put their faith into action, with the ultimate prayer of having church plants led by nationals across the city. We want this network of churches, having been ignited among young adults, to spark a Christian movement across the city.
The UK has influence on the world. People from all over the world, including those from unreached people groups, move to Manchester and other cities to study and conduct business. Reaching these unreached during their time in Manchester provides an opportunity for new followers to take the gospel of Jesus to places outside which missionaries cannot reach. Manchester is the second most populated urban city in the United Kingdom, yet Manchester is unreached: Manchester is a city in Northwest England, with a population exceeding 2.5 million people. Manchester is a key city in Europe, and has the capability to become the tipping point for the Great Commission in Europe.
Ways to get involved
- Prayer is urgent: Europe is strategic, and through a movement of prayer and practical ministry, we hope to see God change this influential, connected and unreached key city. Any significant movement has always been accompanied with prayer, this is one of the most foundational parts of partnership, and we hope you will join with us and pray the Lord will ignite a disciple making movement in Manchester.
- Support our work: In the next year we are planting a church inside of a coffee shop in Manchester’s city centre. Will you help us with this mission and join the Apogee story? We need individuals and churches to support this project in order to see Manchester captivated by the Gospel. We need donations to help buy practical things like chairs, tables, equipment, construction costs, and our first couple months of rent.We need to raise $125,000 to fund this church plant. Together we can elevate culture and community as we share Christ through this café church.
