Equipping people for Gospel talk

“The future of the world depends on the average believer,” said John Meador during his Monday morning workshop at the 2017 Texas Baptists Annual Meeting. Meador is the Founder and President of One Conversation, a nonprofit organization geared toward helping pastors reignite their call to the Gospel, in turn starting a fire for evangelism in their church bodies.

Meador also serves as Pastor of First Baptist Church of Euless. As a pastor, Meador knows the demands of pastoring can become overwhelming, and that the work of the church cannot rest solely on the shoulders of those in ministry positions. The team at One Conversation works to bring evangelism back to the forefront of the church.

“A Gospel-centered church is not one where the pastor preaches the Gospel, but one where the people share the Gospel,” says Meador.

Meador felt called to start One Conversation three years ago after realizing his church was not actively reaching out to their community. He began the organization with the understanding that a pastor’s job is not only to be an evangelist, but to create and equip evangelists.

One Conversation created a program entitled “Can We Talk?” to train believers to share the Gospel. This program exists to assist churches in moving beyond their walls and sharing the Gospel in places they otherwise may not have.

“Can We Talk?” begins with a one-day conference where pastors, church members and staff are trained to lead their congregations through the program.

After the conference, ministers begin a six-week course geared toward training believers to share the Gospel in an easy to understand format. These take place in sessions which begin with teaching and then are immediately followed by “on-the-job sharing.” At the end of the six weeks, each trainee is fully trained and equipped to lead two trainees in the next semester.

FBC Euless began the training with 18 people, which then turned into 18 teams. Now, three years into the program, FBC Euless has equipped 750 witnesses to spread the Gospel to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

“Can We Talk?” has seen great success, with 350 people coming to know Christ in the first year. So far, over 500 pastors have participated in one-day conferences held in 20 states across the country. Churches of all sizes have implemented the program, from megachurches in big cities, to small town congregations. “Can We Talk?” has also recently been adopted by the North American Mission Board (NAMB).

One Conversation is currently working to create programs to assist churches not only in their evangelism efforts, but also in their follow up work as well. Currently, “Can We Grow?” and “Can We Teach?” are in development and will be available in the future.

The next “Can We Talk?” one-day conference scheduled for Texas will be in Euless on December 7. One Conversation has 10 one-day conferences scheduled to be held in Texas during 2018 in San Antonio, Euless, Irving, Dallas, New Braunfels, Corpus Christi, Georgetown and Lubbock. Two of the conferences will be for Spanish speakers. The cost for enrollment is $25 per person. For more information, go to oneconversation.org.
