Lucy Floyd selected as director of ‘legacy ministry’ ISAAC

The Texas Baptists Center for Cultural Engagement welcomed Lucy Floyd as the new director of the Immigration Service and Aid Center (ISAAC). Floyd transitioned from her prior position as attendance clerk at El Paso ISD. She assumed the position on Jan. 21.

“I wanted to be able to glorify his name and to be able to come alongside with him. So, if he changes something… as far as adding to this ministry, I'm available, and I want to do his work,” said Floyd.

Floyd previously served as the ministry assistant for Texas Baptists’ River Ministry from 2000 to 2002.

Floyd said she has a heart for ISAAC because she herself has utilized its resources. As an immigrant, at 21, Floyd was given the choice to re-apply for residency in the United States but was encouraged by her husband to pursue American citizenship.

“I became an American citizen when we lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1992… I went through the whole process,” explained Floyd. “I've known about, in being raised and living in El Paso, [having a] very close connection to Mexico. My family still lived [there], so we would cross back and forth. So, I've always understood the importance of immigration and what is required.”

Even after gaining her American citizenship, Floyd still stayed “close to my culture” and began to see injustices as others went through the citizenship process. She felt for them and began to question how she could be that “humanitarian hand outstretched” to help them get legalized.

In 2013, she and her husband went to San Antonio to go through the ISAAC  program to learn more about it “to see if we could start a ministry in that” at their church. Then, the Floyds moved to a couple different border cities before returning to El Paso, and “ISAAC came back into the conversation.”

“I just wanted to know how to be able to serve God… [and] I felt like that's where God was guiding me and leading me. So, I stepped out of the school district, which was full-time to part-time, so that I could continue what God had birthed… so long ago,” said Floyd.

Floyd said she “feel[s] very passionate about [ISAAC]” and her prayer is that more people would come alongside ISAAC so that their ministries can be more knowledgeable about its mission.

“We are thrilled to welcome back Lucy Floyd to the Texas Baptists family in this strategic role. We hope this ministry will help churches with quality non-biased information, a biblical perspective and a Christ-like approach as they navigate a difficult immigration landscape,” said Katie Frugé, director for the Center for Cultural Engagement. “ISAAC is a legacy ministry of Texas Baptists, and we are excited for Lucy to lead its next chapter, equipping churches and other ministries in this area.”

The Texas Baptists Immigration Service and Aid Center is a project of the Christian Life Commission and exists to equip churches and other organizations to engage the immigrant community along a continuum of ministry options.
